Blue lights leaders condemn assaults on staff

The leaders of police, fire and ambulance services across Sussex have come together to condemn a steep rise in assaults against emergency workers.

Sussex Police Chief Constable Jo Shiner described the trend as ‘completely unacceptable’.

It comes as a national report is published with a wide-ranging set of recommendations around police officer and staff safety.

Motorcyclist in a critical condition following collision in Ninfield
A man is in a critical condition in hospital following a collision in Ninfield.

Just before 11am on Wednesday (2 September) officers received a report of a collision involving a motorcyclist and a Range Rover on the A269 Bexhill Road.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 70s, was airlifted to hospital with multiple serious injuries. He remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Appeal for witnesses to Bexhill town centre assault
Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in Bexhill town centre.

Officers were called to reports of an unprovoked attack on the corner of Parkhurst Road and Devonshire Road around 2.30pm on Saturday 22 August.

The victim was punched to the back of the head but fortunately, did not suffer any serious injury.

Motorcyclist seriously injured in hit-and-run
Police are seeking witnesses after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Northiam.

The incident involving a Harley Davidson and a newer style black Ford Fiesta occurred on the A28 at Northiam, at the junction with New Road, about 12.50pm on Wednesday 26 August.

Concern for missing boy thought to be in Hastings
Police are concerned for the welfare of missing teenager Jaiyan Schmidt.

Jaiyan, 17, has been missing from his home address in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, since August 15.

He is known to have travelled to Hastings on August 20, and is thought to still be in the area. He has links to the Hollington area of Hastings.

Speeding driver who killed cyclist while high on drink and drugs is jailed
A man has been jailed for killing one man and seriously injuring another in two separate incidents.

Mathew Gardiner – also known as George Gardiner – was high on drink and drugs when he collided with a cyclist at about 100mph on the A2690 Combe Valley Way, near Bexhill, on 26 May, 2019.

He had overtaken two vehicles at high speed before manoeuvring back into the correct carriageway, where he collided with an electric bicycle ridden by Antoney Colley.
