Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear Coordinators and Members,

As Chairman of Horsham District NHW Association, I'd like to say a warm and sincere Thank You for all your work over the past year in keeping our neighbourhoods safe.

At a local level, NHW continues to be strong and maintains the prestige and recognition of residents for its work on their behalf. Membership levels are steady, however we continue to need more Area and Street Coordinators, in particular Area Coordinators for (a) HORSHAM - FOREST, PARK, RIVERSIDE, WICKHURST GREEN areas; (b) NUTHURST (MANNINGS HEATH); (c) HENFIELD; (d) RUDGWICK; (e) BRAMBER; (f) SHERMANBURY; (g) STORRINGTON (SOUTH); (h) WEST GRINSTEAD; (i) WASHINGTON.

We are also need volunteers to fulfil the following three volunteers; if you are interested or know of a someone suitable for any of these roles, do please contact us to find out more.

1. Junior NHW Coordinator - we are looking for someone to take over this rewarding and fulfilling role from the current incumbent. I can say that after having attended a number of JNHW programmes at local Primary Schools, this would be a highly rewarding role for someone with a natural ability to communicate and interact with Year 6 children (age 10-11). The present Coordinator wishes to stand down after serving for >6 years; he will, of course, introduce and handover the Coordinator role to his successor. After several weeks of advertising and searching, this is becoming rather urgent now - please do contact us if you can help - thank you.

2. Stock keeper - someone in or close to Horsham with storage space for a number of boxes of leaflets, a briefcase, two plastic storage boxes and two fold-up "flag banners". The role also includes overseeing the use of a gazebo, fold-up tables, chairs and table cloths currently stored at Horsham Police Station. The above are used at various events that NHW supports during the spring and summer.

3. Events Coordinator - this person would determine and coordinate, in conjunction with the Committee, what events NHW should attend each year (usually spring, summer fetes, village fairs etc). This person would also arrange and organise volunteers for each event.

On a more general tone, you will have heard about the rise in fraud, especially ‘scams’. Many of you have probably been contacted by cold-call phone calls or emails; I would like to ask you all to keep a watchful eye on elderly / vulnerable residents in your NHW schemes. If you would like any help or guidance, please let us know.

We view all Coordinators as playing a highly important role! They know what is happening in their local communities. In my own patch in Nutbourne, we have a comprehensive list of residents in this rural area measuring 3 miles by 1 mile. Information on all suspicious incidents / persons are relayed by residents to me or my colleague and then sent to over 80% of the whole population. If you believe your own scheme deserves recognition and that your ideas and initiatives might be beneficially shared elsewhere, do please let us know.

Penultimately, we ask all Coordinators, where possible, to have a deputy in case you become, for any reason, unavailable or indisposed. We do appreciate that having a deputy is not always possible... but! As always, we are also looking for new Coordinators to help improve and grow our NHW schemes across Horsham District.

Thank you once again for your help; on behalf of your Association's Committee and the local Police, I wish you and your loved ones, a very Happy Christmas and a safe, peaceful and prosperous New Year.
