On Thursday 1st March Sussex Police and Neighbourhood First will be conducting a joint operation in Lewes Town. The Operation will be to work jointly on two projects that have been identified by the public as being a problem for businesses and the surrounding community.
It is the intention that officers from both agencies will further engage with members of the street community to try and identify the vulnerabilities of individuals and to assist them, where possible in gaining assistance to help them with their needs and requirements. This will not be an enforcement operation, however it is likely that should assistance or help not be accepted by any individuals, then enforcement may be considered at a later date.
The other area of on-going concern for the public is the use of Cliffe Pedestrian precinct being used as a cut through road by motorists. This will again be an opportunity to speak with motorists to educate and where appropriate, enforce the traffic regulations that are set in place to protect members of the public using the precinct for walking, shopping and cycling as it was designed to be.
PC Goudie from Lewes Prevention Team says, “Although not a regular thing, Sussex Police identifies that one day of action is not going to resolve the issues that have been around for several years. Our intention is to work more closely with other agencies where we can utilise our resources and respond to the public concerns”.
